Today, most of us spend our lives in a physical environment that’s entirely dependent on the automobile. Growing up in the suburbs, I didn’t walk places – I drove and I didn’t think twice about it. If you were to have asked me then what a pedestrian-oriented community was, you’d have seen a blank look come over my face.  

I suspect I’m not alone in this regard, so I’d like to define my terms here in terms of what we mean by a pedestrian-oriented community by way of the TED talk below.
